Microsoft SQL Server Native Client

What is Microsoft SQL Server Native Client?

The SQL Server Native Client contains the SQL Server ODBC driver and the SQL Server OLE DB provider in one native dynamic link library (DLL) supporting applications using native-code APIs (ODBC, OLE DB and ADO) to Microsoft SQL Server.

Overview

The most used version is 9.00.5000.00, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The main program executable is z1sql2008.exe. The software installer includes 200 files and is usually about 1.02 GB (1,097,823,678 bytes). Microsoft.SqlServer.PackageFormatUpdate.dll is the automatic update component of the software designed to download and apply new updates should new versions be released.
