What is Dropbox?

Dropbox is a file hosting service operated by Dropbox, Inc. that offers cloud storage, file synchronization, and client software. Dropbox allows users to create a special folder on each of their computers, which Dropbox then synchronises so that it appears to be the same folder (with the same contents) regardless of the computer it is viewed on. Files placed in this folder are also accessible through a website and mobile phone applications.

Overview

The most used version is 6.4.14, with over 11% of all installations currently using this version. Upon installation and setup, it defines an auto-start registry entry which makes this program run on each Windows boot for all user logins. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. When installed, it will add a context menu handler to the Windows shell in order to provide quick access to the program. The main program executable is dropbox.exe. It also adds an icon to the Windows notifications area in order to provide access to the program. The software installer includes 85 files and is usually about 29.94 MB (31,398,624 bytes). The software utilizes the Nokia Qt cross-platforms C++ framework.

Dropbox is a very common and safe program used to collaborate and share files with friends, family members, and work colleagues. It's very rarely, if ever, bundled with other software in an "adaware" like scenario.
