Recuva

What is Recuva?

Recuva is a data recovery program and is able to recover files that have been "permanently" deleted and marked by the operating system as free space. As with other file recovery programs Recuva works by looking for unreferenced data, but if the operating system has written new data over a deleted file then recovery will often not be possible.

Overview

The most common release is 1.51, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named recuva64.exe. Another goodie brought to you by the folks at Piriform. Two that are quintessential classics: CCleaner Pro; Speccy (free). Haven't used Recuva in a few years. It worked when it did. Just installed the latest version on Windows 7 Ultimate. Haven't tested it yet, but Piriform is pretty reliable. Wish I had an Apple computer. (sigh)
